My name is Lauren McMillen. I grew up in the small town of Shinnston, W. Va. Currently, I am a Junior at West Virginia University, majoring in Broadcast Journalism and International Studies.

I followed my passion for journalism early on in life. I developed my love for writing and reporting in high school. In 2011, I was awarded with the Al Neuharth Free Spirit Journalism Award.

I have always envisioned myself as a journalist and could not think of a better career. The fast paced environment and the deadline driven nature of this business is what I live for. I love meeting new people, sharing their stories, and giving a voice to those that need to be heard. Lets just say my day is not complete without some news!

During my time in college, I have had the opportunity to work for WVU’s University Relations Video Department. Here, I was able to book video and photo shoots for producers, assist in production set-up in the studio, and archive photo and video footage of university events. Screen Shot 2014-11-28 at 9.10.38 PM

When I am not in class, you will find me chasing stories and reporting out in the field. I am a part-time reporter for WDTV 5 News, the CBS affilaite news station in Bridgeport, WV. I joined the 5 News team in February of 2014. I cover breaking news and general assignment stories as a one-man-band reporter. I shoot, edit, and write all of my stories, along with presenting them live on-air and posting them to the web and social media.

Over the past several months, I have had opportunities to cover incredible stories in the communities of North Central West Virginia. I couldn’t be happier to cover the news of my hometown.

When I am not in the newsroom or classroom, I enjoy running, traveling, driving my Beetle Bug, going to Broadway shows, and spending time with family and friends.

After college, I am willing to go anywhere to pursue my dream of working in the new business and I look forward to what the future brings. I am expected to graduate in May of 2016.
