WordPress Banned in Pakistan

According to local media outlets in Pakistan, WordPress blogs are currently not accessible in the country. Many are putting the blame on the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority over alleged security issues.

The Pakistan government has a history of taking away Internet freedom and temporarily blocking websites including Facebook, Flickr, IMDb, Twitter, and Wikipedia.

The government reportedly said that a ban will be temporary and could be lifted in a few days. But as with the previous case, involving YouTube, the ban remains in place. In fact, YouTube has been banned in the country since September 2012 after an anti-Islam video film trailer surfaced on the site.

Pakistani officials claim these sites, and many others, host content that it sees as degrading and inflammatory.

Either way, this act of censorship takes away expression and silences journalists in the country.
